What is hypnotherapy?

What it is…

The state of hypnosis, or trance as it’s otherwise referred to, is an altered state of awareness that we all slip in and out of many times a day.

Have you ever driven a familiar route and once home, thought to yourself that you can’t remember certain parts of the drive? Or perhaps when watching a film or programme you realise you’ve ‘zoned out’ and you’re not really sure what is going on… Or maybe when you’re out for a walk or a run you find your mind wandering so you forget about running or walking momentarily.

Well, that’s trance!

Research shows that we enter this state of mind on average every seven minutes and that it plays a vital role in the process of learning and taking on board new information.

At the end of each session, once we have finished with the talking part, I will guide you into a state of deep relaxation, you will make yourself comfortable and just continue to listen to the sound of my voice and through this, you can reach a trance state which aids the hypnotic process. You’ll be awake the whole time and in complete control., for example, if your phone was to ring, you’d be aware and able to answer it if you wanted to. You don’t even need to have your eyes closed for the process to be effective, but lots of people find their eyes do eventually close anyway.

When we’re in a trance state, we have access to the subconscious mind which becomes more receptive to positive suggestions. This is a very enjoyable experience and will leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Hypnosis itself reduces anxiety, and this is done very simply through relaxation and visualisation, allowing you to focus on the positive aspects of your life, encouraging a shift in perspective.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a brief therapy which means that it is is designed as a short-term therapy and works relatively quickly. Depending on the reasons that you may be seeking help, we should expect to work together over a period of perhaps 6 to 12 sessions, sometimes more, but it’s wise to plan for at least 6 sessions and these should be taken weekly for best results.

What it isn’t…

Hypnotherapy has been historically misunderstood as being “woo” and something to be wary or sceptical of.

Clinical hypnotherapy isn’t the same as stage hypnosis, there’s no way I’d be able to make you walk like a chicken or reveal any deep secrets, I’d never be able to ‘programme’ you to do anything specific. You won’t even be asked to speak at all during your trance session.

Another misconception is that hypnotherapy is dangerous, this is fake news! You will simply be relaxed and if your session is online, then you’ll be in your own environment. You can become fully alert during any stage of your session whenever you like, just the same as when you snap yourself out of a daydream.

This type of therapy is not an overnight solution or a ‘quick-fix’, just like any meaningful change in life, the process takes time and commitment.
